December 2005 minutesAn initial project meeting occurred December 14-16, 2005. OSU staff and participating farmers convened with a twofold objective: (1) to learn more about potato production and (2) to identify farmers’ most problematic areas in potato production. In a participatory process, university researchers and farmers alike took turns leading the group to reach identified outcomes throughout the two-day meeting.
Meeting Outcomes:
During the course of this meeting, it became evident that there were opportunities for sharing existing extension information with the group, as well as a need for research in the form of on-farm investigations. Our goal was achieved as farmers prioritized their potato problems. The areas identified by farmers that we will focus on during this project include:
1. nutrient management
2. insect pest control (wireworms & flea beetles)
3. disease control (late blight)
The farmers also indicated they would like more information on hilling, harvesting, seed quality, vine kill and management of culls.
